Liberia: First Lady donates 15,000 face masks

Liberia’s First Lady Clar Marie Weah has donated 15,000 pieces of face masks to the National Covid 19 Response Coordination Center, which is situated at the General Services Agency, in Monrovia.

The donation, presented on Thursday, through Mrs. Weah’s Foundation, Clar Hope Foundation, seeks to boost ongoing efforts led by the Liberian government to curb the further spread of coronavirus in the country.

Speaking on behalf of the foundation, Gaelle Mediem disclosed that the gesture demonstrates the First Lady’s concern about the Covid 19 situation in Liberia and her commitment to supporting the national response to the virus.

“The First Lady, first of all, sends her thank you and congratulations to those on the frontlines, ” said Mediem.

“What she’s trying to do is to complement the government’s efforts to control the spread of the virus. We know that the mask is very essential in the control of the spread of covid 19; so that’s why we are here today to present an initial donation of 15-thousand masks.”

The First Lady’s intervention comes at a time when wearing mask in the public is now mandatory and concerns are increasing over the average Liberian’s ability to afford one. It appears that this gesture will address such issues.

Mediem further disclosed that the initiative which would continue to supply mask free of charge to Liberians through the National Covid 19 Response Coordination Center is being done in collaboration with Orange Liberia.

She praised Orange Liberia for being generous for sponsoring the initiative.

According her, the masks were produced in line with standards set by the health ministry.

Receiving the donation, the National Coordinator of the Covid 19 response, Mary Broh, thanked the Liberian First Lady for her passion and commitment to serving humanity.

“She has a heart. She’s a mother and she’s is a wife,” Broh said, as she praised the First Lady’s work aimed at improving the lives of the underprivileged people of Liberia.

“I have watched her and I still watch her. The work that she’s doing in Liberia to benefit mankind, to benefit the Liberian people; I salute her for that.”

Meanwhile, the National Covid 19 Response National Coordinator assured the Clar Hope Foundation that the masks will be used for the intended purpose, particularly targeting people, including the elderly, who cannot afford.

The donation of the masks comes on the heels of a recent outreach initiative by the Clar Hope Foundation and the Office of the First Lady in which nearly two thousand faucet buckets along with detergents were distributed to several communities, while huge consignment of assort food and non-food items were supplied to over 20 orphanages in Montserrado and Margibi Counties.

These initiatives are expected to continue as Mrs. Weah remains unwavering in supporting the fight against covid 19 and preserving the lives of Liberians across the country.
