Nigerian striker John Owoeri scored four times on the last day of the Swedish premiership on November 6 in BK Hacken’s 7-0 routing of relegation-bound Falkenberg to end the season as the highest goalscorer with 17 goals.

This is the third time that an African has won the golden boot. Nigerian Peter Ijeh achieved the feat in 2002 with 24 goals while Benin’s Razak Omotoyossi banged in 14 goals in 2007 to emerge as joint top-scorer.

The 2016 season also saw Kenyan attacker Michael Olunga surging late to strike 12 times for Djurgarden.

In the lower division, known as the Superett, Sierra Leonean marksman Mohammed Buya Turay scored ten times to help Athletic United Football Club get promotion to the premiership while Nigerians Nsima Peter of Varberg and Oke Akpoveta of Dalkurd also grabbed the same number of goals in a fine season which ended with Malmo FF lifting the national title.
