Nigeria’s 8th Senate and Assembly is currently undergoing crises, due to what is attributed to as “civilian coup” orchestrated by Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Yakubu Dogora.

The manner and scenario which led to the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Dogora as the Senate President and Speaker respectively, questions their loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) party. Both individuals defy party’s directives and struck a deal with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a deal that also produced Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President.

Nigerians rejected PDP, and voted for change, a change they envisioned in all its leader. Saraki/Dogora political alliance with their former party has divided the APC, and crystallized the PDP’s agenda to tackle the APC and its government, a party whose banner and goodwill they contested and won election few months ago.

“A man who rode on his father’s back to prominence and consequently broke it, is capable of anything treachery”. The real intention and mission of Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogora is highly suspicious and worrisome. Their defiance to read the APC leader’s letter at the plenary as well as to obstinately refuse to acknowledge the party’s directives on principal officers, indicate their outright disregard for party’s supremacy.

Such rebellion pose a threat to the party, its government and its change cause. However, it is believed that the party leaders will muster the required aptitude to arrest the drift. Meanwhile, it is imperative on the party’s hierarchy to enforce discipline on all its members, especially its principal officers, towards damage control and stabilizing the government platform for the promised change.
