Canadian philanthropist family donates to Gambia

A Canada-based Philanthropist krish Roopnarine and his family recently donated two motorcycle ambulances to two communities of Foni Berefet District, a rural part of Gambia.

The donation was done through the Hagie Gai Drammeh Foundation in the Gambia. The presentation was held at the Independence stadium in Bakau.

The ambulances were built and designed by Krish Roopnarine and his family in Canada and then shipped to the Gambia.

They were presented to Foni Berefet and Nyankui in the Upper River Region.

The ambulances, exceptionally engineered to be attached to motorbikes, are custom-made to meet the challenging topography and urgent healthcare needs of the rural communities.

The donation also included wheelchairs, hospital gowns and essential medical equipment.

Speaking during the donation program on behalf of his family, Roopnarine said their gesture seeks to improve emergency medical access for residents of these remote villages.

Mr. Roopnarine noted that “We are humbled to be part of this journey.

“Our family believes in the strength of community and the importance of health equity. We will continue to stand with the people of The Gambia in their pursuit of better health results.”

Speaking also at the program, the CEO and founder of Hagie Drammeh Foundation, Hagie Drammeh, lauded the Roopnarine family and highlighted the profound impact of the donation.

Drammeh stressed that “these ambulances are more than just vehicles; they are lifelines, symbols of hope, and a promise that no one will be left behind, no matter how remote their village or how rough the road”.

The ceremony was graced by Gambian National Assembly members, Amie Colley of Foni Berefet and Ebrima Jaiteh of Sandu, both of whom expressed whole-hearted gratitude while emphasizing the impact the items will have on the local communities.

Mr. Roopnarine has donated funds, wheelchairs, enlightening materials, over 5000 walkers and more to the West Indies and some African countries.

Beneficiaries are located in St. Vincent, Antigua, Grenada, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Dominica and Guatemala.

Others are Mali, Miami (USA), Jamaica, St. Kitts Nevis, Honduras, Cambodia, Ecuador, Suriname, Jamaica, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Armenia, Pakistan (funds for the poor), St. Lucia, Cambodia, Philippines, Gambia and Liberia.

In 2021, the Federation of Liberians in Canada (FLAC) donated medical supplies, provided by Mr. Roopnarine, to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Liberia.

In December 2021, humanitarian Roopnarine, through his Liberian Partner Draper C. Tolborh Sr., donated toys, food stuff and educational materials to kids in Montserrado and Grand Bassa Counties.

Making the donations on behalf of Mr. Roopnarine, Mr. Tolborh, a Liberian journalist, said ‘’on behalf of my friend Krish, these toys and food stuff are meant for you to celebrate this festive season and it is his way of identifying with you’’.

In response, some of the beneficiaries thanked Mr. Roopnarine for his timely gesture and prayed that the God will continue to bless him.

In 2022, Mr. Roopnarine and family donated computers to Girls In Technology Liberia (GITL) that celebrated its 6th anniversary in February.

In April, Mr. Roopnarine and family donated a barrel of several educational materials and two set of computers to his Liberian journalist friend to be distributed to community dwellers something that was done on May 13, 2025 in Warwein, Capitol Bye Pass, Monrovia.

The school designated to receive the computers did not meet the criteria because of fact check.

Mr. Roopnarine commenced his humanitarian work in 2013 and he is concerned about underprivileged people around the world.

A native of Chase Village in Trinidad and Tobago, he migrated to Canada in 2010.

He works full time as a shipper/receiver and continues to stress that he is elated in helping those that are desperately in need.

He has a family of three, his wife Dhamatie and sons Demitri and Yuri who continue to buttress his his aspiration to assist others.
